Updates

Anne just came in and got her guitar setup. The string height is half what it was before, now she's ready for her lessons at Montavilla Guitar Studio!

This very cool vintage Kamaka ukulele came in for some TLC. Couple of loose joints, cracks and a bit of fret work. Check out the rope binding!

This cigarbox mandolin has been played a lot- check out that wear! A new set of stainless frets are being installed today, it'll soon be ready for another round!

I just rewired this PRS with treblebleeds and gold Lollartrons- looks and sounds very sweet.

One of my all time favorite guitars was on the bench today, a #Gibson Style O from 1925. This one's in great shape and has that punchy bright tone. After a fresh setup and strings, it's ready to go for another 94 years!

Here's a cool telemaster in for setup and fretwork. Plays great now that all the frets are seated, glued, and leveled.

Open for the morning tomorrow, 10-2. Then taking the afternoon off in honor of Dr. MLK. Stop by if you see the rainbow out front!

The Montavilla Animal Clinic sign is changed into something new. We fix instruments instead of pets, but Portland Guitar Repair is still animal friendly!

James was recommended to me by a local, high end guitar store as someone who could help me get my guitars set up exactly how I wanted. They weren't wrong. He's since worked on my Santa Cruz and Gibson Hummingbird and the results are excellent. Portland Guitar Repair is now my go to shop.

I live nearby James' shop hence my early discovery. Like most guitarists, I have a collection of waifs and strays many of whom are in need of a lot of T.L.C. From simple setups to major surgery James has had an imaginative and skilled approach to renovating instruments I thought beyond help - my herd is looking healthier by the day! He's also a good, versatile musician who understands the guitarists' viewpoint and needs - and he even does ukes! Fast turnaround, too.Highly recommended and easily accessible on Stark St just before it climbs to Tabor, next to the Sunday market. P.S. parking out front is great.

Amidst Portland's wide array of guitar stores, custom shops & luthiers, I was previously unaware this shop existed. I live in the Montavilla neighbourhood and randomly dropped in to inquire about a setup for my Fender Strat. Not only was the owner extremely friendly & knowledgable, but both his quote & turnaround time were more than fair. Portland needs to support more "Mom & Pop" businesses like these, especially amidst the ever encroaching gentrification spreading throughout our neighbourhoods. Wether you're a veteran musician or just starting out, the owner of this shop, James, seems to genuinely care & provides quality service.
